Read moreA peek into the classroom: Swedish Bachelor (BSc Hons) degree student Thea Peters presented an interesting comparison between The Pirate Bay and Spotify during the Business Law class at ESE Florence earlier this term. She showed how from a legal standpoint The Pirate Bay prefaced Spotify’s worldwide success as one of the largest media and digital music streaming services.
Where The Pirate Bay mostly promoted unauthorised peer-to-peer sharing of entertainment, media and digital content and accommodated copyright infringement, consequently facing numerous legal challenges, Spotify decided to offer a legal and more convenient alternative to media and digital music streaming.
In her presentation, Thea described Spotify’s legal framework, consisting of licensing deals, negotiations with industry stakeholders and continuous innovation and improvement of their services.
She furthermore illustrated the importance of navigating intellectual property law in the music industry. Understanding and adhering to licensing, royalty and copyright regulations are critical for businesses operating in the digital content and entertainment sectors.
Knowledge of international business law, however, is crucial for future managers and entrepreneurs of any business sector, as it provides a framework for navigating the complexities of global commerce. Understanding cross-border regulations, trade agreements and dispute resolution mechanisms is essential for making informed decisions and mitigating risks. Compliance with international legal standards fosters trust among stakeholders, facilitates smoother transactions, and ensures a stable business environment. In a world where markets transcend borders, a strong grasp of international business law empowers professionals to seize opportunities, build sustainable ventures, and navigate legal challenges, contributing to the success and longevity of their enterprises on the global stage.
ESE Florence’s Business Law Professor Carlo Rocchi commented on Thea’s engaging presentation: ‘an excellent comparative case study and great example of how a company can come up with a viable and successful business plan when they include strong legal foundations.’
